The intent for the exhibition in the Department's new gallery space is to exemplify the Design + Environmental Analysis experience through collected artifacts and placed within suspended frames, which acts as floating display systems. When we were first delving into this process we asked the question: What does it mean to frame something? When someone frames something it can be transformed from an ordinary object to something more precious.
Inspiration for the exhibit was gathered from a multitude of concepts from our education in DEA. In-types research describes a concept of Wunderkammer, or 'wonder-room', as a historic exhibition technique in which walls are arranged with a random juxtaposition of framed disparate objects. Borrowing the aesthetic of the wunderkammer, we exploded its orientation into a three-dimensional display of artifacts. The act of placing simple objects within frames elevates their status in the eye of the viewer; the object's significance, however, remains personal to the user.
