Honorable Mention

chasm

1. A deep fissure in the earth, rock or another surface.

2. A profound difference between people, viewpoints, feelings.

The pavilion is a result of a process of fragmentation. Both North and South Sudan were subject to similar processes. Bringing together disparate elements to achieve peaceful equilibrium is the aim of this structure and our hope fore the parts of Sudan that are in conflict, but share a common history and border. Once whole, the pavilion is split in two by a chasm in the structure. One made of metal and one made of wood, the two are laced together with rope, symbolic of the peaceful coexistence of these two new countries. Constructed of separate wood and metal frames woven together with rope, the pavilion is both singular and dualistic in structure. These qualities are decided by the visitor as they walk through and engage in the experience of diaphanous space and light. By day the pavilion is a tenuous collection of separate spaces, but at night it comes together as a beacon of hope and unity to be viewed from afar.
